How to choose an embroidery machine
Start by deciding how large your planned designs will be and how frequently you will use the machine. A single-needle machine with a suitable embroidery area may be ideal for home projects, while regular order-based work places greater importance on speed, multiple needles, convenient colour changes and an efficient workflow.
Important features to compare
- Maximum embroidery area. This determines the largest design that can be stitched in one hoop without splitting it.
- Single- or multi-needle system. A multi-needle machine can reduce manual thread changes in complex, multi-colour designs.
- Included hoops. Compare the supplied sizes and the availability of optional hoops for the individual model.
- Design transfer. Check which file formats and transfer methods are compatible with the selected machine.
- Controls and ease of use. Screen functions, design positioning, automatic features and threading can make a significant difference in everyday work.
Embroidery area, hoops and design preparation
Choose the embroidery area according to your largest planned projects, not only the smallest everyday designs. A compact hoop may be sufficient for monograms and small details, while large lettering, back designs and multi-element compositions require more working space.
An embroidery file can be used only when its format and size are compatible with the machine. A regular image is not an embroidery file; preparing a new logo or illustration may require digitising and suitable embroidery software.

Frequently asked questions
Does an embroidery machine do everything automatically?
The machine automatically stitches a prepared design, but the user must hoop the material correctly, choose a suitable stabiliser, needle and thread, load a compatible file and monitor the process.
Do I need a computer for machine embroidery?
It depends on the model and the designs you use. Machines may include built-in patterns and different import methods, while editing or digitising new designs is generally done with computer software.
Can an embroidery machine stitch company logos?
Yes, provided the logo has been properly prepared in a compatible embroidery format and the settings suit the material. A standard image may first need to be digitised.
